The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge is over 5,000 acres. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for waterfowl and other wildlife, the wetlands, forests, and creeks offer abundant opportunities for stewardship and exploration. The Estuary Partnership works on the River S Unit of the Refuge with volunteers to restore native vegetation. The River S Unit is one of the best birding areas in the region, offering a a year round 4.2 mile auto tour route accessible to busses. The River S Unit also has a short hiking trail through forested wetlands (open May 1 to September 30; the auto tour route is also open to foot traffic during this time period).
